Winry! Zampano! Jerso! May! Scar! Can any of you hear me?

[ there's a cla-clank-clank in the background of this and a strange echo to the voice. The snapshot only captures flashes of forest and snow. ]

It's no good... we must have gotten separated somehow. But these wings, and the talking animals... this strange book. Just what is going on here?

[ PLUNK... PLUNK PLUNK PLUNK. CLUNK. ] Huh? [ the clanking stops. the journal's picking up on the loud, angry sounds of squirrels now. ] I-I'm sorry! I'm going now, you don't need to worry- [ CLUNKCLUNKCLUNKCLUNK! that actually hurts when you aim for the wings! ] Hey, stop throwing that!

Maybe they've done something to the armor and the wings to make a connection? [ perhaps it's all in the composition of the wings themselves? al makes a thoughtful sound... ]

Something else just feels different. [ he has to think back to the mountains and that weakness...

and then suddenly he's remembering. ] Brother, the country-!

You mean Amestris? I know- but we can't do anything with how things are now. Not yet. [Edward shifts back, giving Al back his head and crossing his arms.] How much do you know?

Scar's brother knew about the circle. [ he takes a second to secure his head. talking when doing that has always felt a little weird. ] We found something in the notes he left. There's an opposing circle, built around both alchemy and alkahestry.

An opposing circle!? That's what the research was about!? [Whoa, this is good news! ...Wait hang on-] So we have a way of stopping the transmutation of the Philospher's Stone?

As far as we can tell, Scar's brother found out about the circle and came up with this as a countermeasure... but I didn't have enough time to investigate any further. The design looked like it was reversing the pull of the energy itself.

[ theories, right now, were the best they had and kept the group's collective morale up. they'd been busy planning something else to buy themselves more time. taking down envy quickly became their next priority and he hadn't had time to devote his full attention to their findings. ]

I wish I had it with me. If time really does stop, then we could have more time to anaylze all of the notes.

Not enough time? It's been months since then, was there so much to analyze that it's taking that long? The Promised Day is so close...!

[Shit, they don't have time to screw around! If only he hadn't been injured like that, he could've caught up to them and helped with the research... stupid Kimbley, throwing everything off course...]

Months? [ there's the possibility that he was out longer than he thought, but he doubts it. it's only been a few days since he set out for his journey, and... at the most, a day since he'd fallen unconscious the second time. ] Ed, it's only been a few days!

A few- [That's right- the time difference. Hughes is from... back then, and Elicia is two years in the future... Al must be from after they separated.

This complicates things somewhat.]

I get it... so they took you from back then. [Hm, hm... that means he has to fill Al in on a lot of things, then.]

[ were it not for the fact that someone has already given him the rundown on the fact that people can be pulled from anywhere on their timeline, he might have been somewhat confused and very alarmed at a statement like that.

as it is, he just drops his hands and looks at his brother. ~~seriously. but you suck at reading his expressions.~~. ] What's happened?

[Oh geez. He couldn't have asked a more loaded question. But it's Al, and he'd have filled Al in anyway, so Edward nods without hesitation, sitting himself down on the closest rock.]

It's kind of a long story. To keep it simple, I fought Kimbley... he had two Philosopher's Stones with him.

[ two things immediately rush through him. concern for his brother, first and foremost... ed's alive, obviously... but, knowing him...] Are you alright? [ though that's a moot question, the answer wouldn't be a real one.

the second is a sharp realization. two philosopher's stones? all of those lives... all of that horrible power in the hands of the wrong people. ]

[There's no hesitation when Ed nods; there's no reason to worry Al about his injury from that time, as well as the transmutation he performed on himself. The consequences were his alone to bear, after all- it was his weakness that caused it to happen anyway.]

I'm fine, fine! [He waves a hand dismissively, making it obvious (as if the running around earlier wasn't proof enough) that he's not hurt or impaired at all.] But because of that I couldn't do much to find you for a while. The other two of Kimblee's chimeras helped me out- they were caught in the explosion that separated us from the group. We headed for a town to hide out until things calmed down.

[aka until they were sure he wouldn't bleed to death.]

[ there's probably more you're not telling him, but there are things he isn't telling you right now. there's some even trade off there, something that will eventually be brought up when far more vital things aren't being discussed.]

I think finding us would have been difficult. [ but separated for months? that's a strange thing to think about... he supposes that he didn't try to find ed for the same reason ed didn't seek him out. the logical leap is easy to make here. ]

I thought you'd go to the house we hid in when we captured Gluttony, but when we went there, it was completely empty! Where did you even go!?

[Seriously, bro, he was worried about you.]

I'm not sure. We haven't even left the Ishvalan village that Scar took us to yet. [ ... but where would he have gone? he considers it a moment, and one name springs to mind almost immediately. ] Maybe Liore?

Mm. That sounds likely. [Liore was both a safe haven and a city that's suffered a great deal since they left it last time; it's only natural that they might go there.] Last I heard you were with Major Miles, heading for an eastern training ground, but that was just a few days ago for me. We were at the cottage for a few hours because it turned out it wasn't empty after all.

It's bad enough the Elric brothers were just defeated by a band of squirrels...

[It's Ling's voice, from above. In the tree perhaps.]

[Suddenly he drops down from the tree, in front of the two. His voice deepens, as Greed has his own input to make.]

But you're really going to leave out my part of the story? Tch, you just can't find good henchmen these days.

[ the first voice is met with confusion. timelines, if hughes is here then-! ] Lin- [ ...and the second is met with a shift to the defensive!

the last time he saw you, there was much fighting and fleeing for dear life. ] Greed!

[Edward doesn't react quite as strongly- because he's more irritated than he is on edge.]

You're here, too! How long have you been in Luceti!?

[Greed gives Al a disinterested look, despite the defensive posture, so he just glances at Ed instead.]

A few days. I figured by now you'd have figured something out. [Even with him stalking you off and on!] I guess it's been too short a time.

[ bantering? bantering is new. what he remembers from the last greed is that he's not a bad guy, just... greedy. what he remembers of the current greed is, well, running. away. very fast.

[Grumble grumble. Leave it to Greed to make snips at them while they get acquainted.]

Shut up, it's a work in progress! I only just got here. [He glances back at Al, gesturing for him to relax.] I was getting to that. Ling came to the house we were hiding out in- he said Greed had cut ties with the other homunculus, so we joined up with him. We're not enemies anymore.

[He simply smirks, then turns his attention to Al.]

The shrimp works for me now. If you want, you're welcome to join the gang too.

[ and relaxation is go! he's willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, after all. out of all of the homunculus he'd met, greed certainly seemed the most human. ] That's great! I-
