[ when this happens, one may find an unresponsive alphonse elric slumped over beside the fountain. you might even see him fall! he's not going to be getting up until the other elric brother is.

but a little while later, the voice clicks on. it's close to midnight. ]

It's a little late, but does anyone have any good book recommendations?

[It's pretty late at night when Edward responds - close to the middle of the night, actually - and he's writing with his automail hand, so his writing is unusually messy. He's also trying to stay off the camera. He knew Al would be awake, though, and he'd promised to check in every night, so... here goes.]

Hey Al. Been reading?

[ he tries not to show how relieved he is when those words pop up onto the screen. admitting how terrified he is for his brother to himself is one thing, but adding the pressure of his fears onto him would only make him more distracted.

... but that writing is messy. there's a thrill of terror as he considers why his brother isn't talking. ]

Yes. I'm all out of books again.

[He's trying to neaten it up as he writes, but using the automail is more awkward than he'd like. The past few days have been harder than usual, but he's done his best to keep Al as uninvolved as possible.]

At this rate you'll have read the whole library by next month.

Maybe they have a rotating selection. [ HE HOPES. ] I think I'll reread some of the other books I've read soon.

Guess that's true. Those alkahestry books definitely weren't there until you found them.

[He could really use a book himself, actually; kind of wishes he'd brought one with him. Lying around in the med area is boring the hell out of him.]

Oh, that's right! I was going to ask someone if they spoke the language. I'll do it once you're home.

[ ... but. ] Are you alright?

[ he's rather be out there with you than here and helpless. ]

[...Haha. For once, he can answer that one honestly; he's pretty much out of the fight at this point.]

[ there's a pause for a few minutes as he thinks about what to say.

When you get back we should try watching some of the documentaries the library has.

[Tell him, and he'll get that sinking feeling that their brotherly relationship is a little more fucked up than he'd originally thought. The change of subject is a huge relief, though.]

Documentaries? What about?

I've seen some about the science in other worlds. [ and seers. nostradomus!! he's curious about how those numerical predictions would match up in their own world. ]

I didn't know you were so interested.

[It does make sense, though. They're in another world, surrounded by people from even more worlds. It's a good chance to learn as much as possible.]

I want to learn as much about these other worlds as we can while we're here. [ something at night to keep him entertained, basically. ]

It's a good idea. And it might come in handy later.

[He can't think of how, but if alchemy won't get them out of here, it'll likely benefit them to know more about this world and the rest.]

I hope so.

[ he pillows his cheek on one big metal hand. ] Remember that book you gave me?

Seriously? I didn't know we had one in Amestris. How's it compare?

I prefer ours. But in the other one without alchemy, the criminals have to be a lot more creative.

[ unsure... he doesn't want to bring this up while his brother is still out there. but are they staying in the house? ]

Sure. [Edward taps the pen against the page for a few times, puzzling over his options for a moment. Blearily, however, he fumbles the pen, and it slips from the automail fingers and rolls along the floor under his cot. He curses - he can't get up right now to fetch it, he'll just fall over - and then-]

[Voice]

...Hey, Al?

[His voice is strained, quieter than normal, so it's probably obvious - as if it wasn't before - that all isn't well. But at the same time he doesn't sound like he's in an absurd amount of pain, either.]
